15TH JULY 2023, Start 8:00 AM, 22KM, 1,750M V+ CANAZEI, ITALY
After a little over 2 hours of battling it out Elhousine Elazzaoui and Judith Wyder took the win at the DoloMyths Run, the GTWS 2023’s 3rd stage.
Elhousine Elazzaoui, a first!
He had never won a Golden Trail World Series race. Always in the lead pack and never the winner, Elhousine Elazzaoui (Pini Mountain Racing – Morocco) finally raised his arms to the sky at the finish line at the DoloMyths Run, the 3rd leg in the GTWS 2023. The Moroccan finished on top in the most technical race of the Series after taking command at the summit pass.
"I’m really thrilled with my race," he confided at the finish line. "It’s the first time I’ve taken the lead and gone it alone out front, and it paid off. I’m still gaining experience at these races but today I knew I had the physical shape to win. I wasn’t worried about Stian, I felt strong and well prepared and I’m so pleased to finally take home the win."
Roberto Delorenzi (Brooks – Switzerland), long-time chasing the leading pair, finally hit the gas in the last section to pip the post in second place.
"I really didn’t expect to finish second! I knew I was in great shape and I could probably finish in the top 10, but I never thought a podium finish was possible! I felt great right from the start, in the downhill I pushed it really hard with Fred and at the end I still had power in my legs, I felt like I hadn’t emptied the tank and could still accelerate to clinch the second place."
Completing the podium is Frédéric Tranchand(Scott – France)
"I’m really chuffed with my race today! I needed to prove to myself that I was still capable of getting a podium spot on a Golden Trail World Series race even when the field was as stacked as it was today. There were four of us battling for the podium behind Elhousine and I’m really happy to have 3rd place."
Queen Judith is back!
Judith Wyder (Hoka One One/Red Bull – Switzerland) was absent from the GTWS races last year due to several health issues. For her first appearance since 2021 "The Queen" showed she everyone that was back!
"I’m not sure I’m really the queen," she replied laughing at the finish line. "But I’m especially happy to be back on top form and be able to come back to Canazei. It’s an incredible race, tough but incredible. The atmosphere and landscapes are just magnificent. The women’s level has risen so much! I’m really proud to have won this race. After this result I think I will try and train for Sierre-Zinal and then go to the USA races; I’m dying to meet the American runners!"
Just behind Judith was Sophia Laukli (Salomon – USA).
"I’m pretty satisfied with this 2nd place because I wasn’t feeling that good before the race. I was quite nervous and worried about the climb. I set off pretty quick, even if it wasn’t the same pace I had at the Mont-Blanc, but when Judith overtook me I felt the same as when Nienke passed me last year and I just couldn’t keep up. I hung in there and the downhill turned out to be quite fun, which usually it never is for me. In the end it worked out pretty well so I’m happy!"
Just like 2021, Karina Carsolio (Black Diamond – Mexico) completed the podium.
"I’m really pleased with this 3rd position. This type of short and technical race really suits me. That’s why I wanted to prove my worth. I knew I was well prepared, and everything went really well. I gave it my all right from the start until the finish line, I even got a little worried that I’d blow up, but I made it to the podium! I really needed this podium finish because I’ve been having stomach issues on races for a while which have prevented me from running to my full potential."
Next stop: Switzerland
The third leg has drawn to a close and in a month’s time the Golden Trail World Series will be in Switzerland to celebrate Sierre-Zinal’s 50th anniversary. See you on 12th August for the fourth leg of the GTWS 2023.
