PIKES PEAK ASCENT ONE BATTLE, NO RECORDS BROKEN

17th September 2022, Start 7:00 AM, 21KM, 2,382M V+ MANITOU SPRINGS, USA Rémi Bonnet and Nienke Brinkman win the 5th stage of the Golden Trail World Series

We promised you a show and a battle, we kept our promise! There was an impressively stacked field on the start line in Manitou Springs, both on the men’s and women’s sides. Under the soft, early morning rays of sunshine speculation was rife in the little Colorado village: would someone beat the record? The men’s? The women’s? After a white-knuckle ride Matt Carpenter and Kim Dobson’s records held their course, but the runners gave it all they had to reach the Pikes Peak summit at over 4,300m above sea level as fast as they could!

Rémi Bonnet: "I’d already won before the start gun!"

He was promised this race! For several years, Rémi Bonnet (Team Salomon, Switzerland) has proven he’s the best climber on the circuit; we were reminded of this just recently when he established the record for the vertical kilometre at La Fouly, and then beating the Incline record here in Colorado last Wednesday (a steep 600-metre climb on 1.4km). No one could dispute his victory today! "I’m so happy," he confided at the finish line. "I tried to stay in the group at the start, but it wasn’t going fast enough! I felt like I was going to crash into the runners in front of me. So, I went past, and I started getting into my groove. Joe tried to hang on, but I knew I still had a lot of energy. In the next higher section, with the altitude, I knew I had created a gap, and no one would catch me! This one was mine! I’d already won before the start gun, I knew it, but I kept it to myself. It’s been 4 years since I won a Golden race and boy does it feel good!" A little further back was Daniel Osanz (Team Adidas Terrex, Spain). "I’m really happy! It’s incredible to finish second in a Golden Trail Series race. I knew I was strong because I trained really well these past two months, but the level is so high! I gave it my all and I was feeling fantastic! I was right up there for about a minute, but in the end the altitude got the better of me and I couldn’t keep up the pace.Joseph Gray crossed the line in third position. He may be ranked on the Pikes Peak Ascent race – as he adhered to the race’s regulations – however in the Golden Trail World Series he has no ranking due to not adhering to the health policy programme before and after the race (
https://www.goldentrailseries.com/health-policy.htm).

Nienke, the stronger out of the three!

Rarely has the women’s start list been so impressive! Practically an impossible task to predict the order of the winners. Three women did seem to stand out: Nienke Brinkman (Team Nike Trail, The Netherlands), Maude Mathys(Team Salomon, Switzerland) and Sophia Laukli (Team Salomon, USA). And it was indeed these women who fought a merciless fight to finish in this order at the summit. At the finish line, it was an exhausted

Nienke Brinkman who described how she was feeling: "That was really tough! My legs were killing me because of the altitude! At the start I set the pace, but I could see Sophia just behind me and that put the pressure on me. Then in the higher section, I turned around and there was Maude careering upwards like a rocket. I just thought "NO! Maude, please no!" I gave it everything I had! I can’t feel my arms now, it’s really weird. Now I have to try and recover to prepare to fight again in a week’s time in Flagstaff." Maude Mathys was surprisingly fresh at the finish line, a complete contrast to her rival. "I felt really good," she explains. "It’s pretty frustrating actually, I felt like I could’ve turned around and done the downhill! At the start my quads were tight and I couldn’t keep up with the pace, then they relaxed. That said I don’t think I could’ve gone any faster. I think we’re always on the edge of fantastic sensations and blowing up completely. I’m happy with this second place and we’ll see what happens at Flagstaff!" Sophia Lauklicompletes the podium. "It was a really tough race. I was feeling good on the first part, right up there with Nienke. But the higher section I started suffering and I just couldn’t find the pace. When Maude passed me 3 to 4 miles before the finish, I couldn’t do anything. I’m still pleased to have been able to do this race with these girls and can’t wait for Flagstaff!"

See you in Flagstaff!

Now the athletes must rest because they only have one week to recover before the ultimate stage: the Flagstaff Sky Peaks in Arizona. See you on Sunday 25th September for the last battle of the season before the grand final!
