Philemon Ombogo and Sophia Laukli claimed victory at the Sierre-Zinal’s 50th edition after a thrilling race.
He may have lost sight of the frontrunners for a while, but Philemon Kiriago Ombogo (Run2gether, Kenya) pulled out the stops in the second half of the race to win Sierre-Zinal’s 50th edition. "
I didn't expect to win because I knew Patrick was way stronger than me! But when I saw the chance to overtake him at around the 18th kilometre, I took it. I'm thrilled to have won this incredible race".
His teammate Patrick Kipngeno (Run2gether, Kenya) finished just behind him. "Philemon and I ran a clever race. I knew I was stronger than him in the uphill, but he was stronger than me in the downhill. I'm not at all disappointed finishing second if he won the race!"
Kevin Kibet (Milimani Runners, Kenya) took third place.
"This is the first race I've run outside my home country and I'm really proud of my result. Patrick is my coach and Philemon is my best friend, so I'm happy! I'm going to keep training to come back even stronger next year!"
And that’s 2 for Sophia Laukli!
She ran a flawless race. Sophia Laukli (Salomon, USA) held back for a while; she was in third place at the top of the first climb, then she stepped on the gas to catch up with the two rivals ahead of her and win Sierre-Zinal’s 50th edition, her second victory in the 2023 Golden Trail World Series. "
Everything I did today worked out and I'm mega proud. It was really hard, but I had a lot of fun. I knew I had to take it easy at the start and I pushed hard on the climb without overdoing it. I think it's the first race where I've managed to be tactical and it worked!"
Joyce Muthoni Njeru (On Running, Kenya) finished second.
"This is the first time I’ve managed to finish Sierre-Zinal and I'm really pleased with this second place. I tried to keep everything under control so I didn’t blow up along the way, because I know it's not easy finishing on the podium here. I want to train even more so I can come back stronger next year!"
Philaries Jeruto Kisang (Run2gether, Kenya) rounded off the podium.
"I felt really good on the climb, but on the flat I dropped my flask and ran out of water. I managed to pick some up later and that gave me some energy. But I'm really happy I could make a comeback and finish on the podium."
