August 2, 2025, marks a historic moment in trail running for the Pitztal: for the first time, the Golden Trail World Series (GTWS) comes to Austria – and the Salomon Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail (PAGT) becomes a global stage for elite trail runners.
Worldwide there are eight races and only two races in the DACH region are included in this prestigious series – and the Pitz Alpine is now one of them. Once considered an insider tip, it now stands shoulder to shoulder with legends like Zegama-Aizkorri and Sierre-Zinal. A sporting accolade and a bold statement: a hotspot for world-class athletes, passionate trail fans, and breathtaking mountain backdrops.

WHERE GLACIERS MEET THE SKY
At 11:30 AM, the race kicks off in the heart of Mandarfen. Runners compete in an innovative flower-format course with three exciting loops:
- Opening loop (approx. 5 km, 120 m elevation gain): A fast start with a gentle climb to the Taschachalpe, followed by a narrow downhill trail – a dynamic opener that's far from easy.
- Main loop (approx. 13 km, 1,300 m elevation gain): The ultimate test: a steep climb through the Hirschtal (600 m of elevation gain over 2 km with over 30% incline!) to the Sunna Alm, flowing sections around the Rifflsee, and then the brutal ascent to Grubenkopf (560 m over 2.2 km). Technical, tough, wild – a playground for true mountain beasts.
- Final loop: One last push – ending with a fast and furious downhill showdown back to Mandarfen. The sprint to the finish line becomes a final test of willpower – and a major spectator highlight.
HIGHEST OF TYROL
The Pitztal is known as the “Highest of Tyrol” - and this name says it all: it is home to the highest glacier in Tyrol as well as numerous other natural experiences and captivating views. Unique trails with glacier crossings, past Austria's highest mountain lake and numerous 3,000-metre peaks with breathtaking panoramic views promise perfect conditions for pros and beginners alike.
Located at the end of the Pitztal Valley in Tyrol, Mandarfen is one of the most scenic alpine villages in the Austrian Alps. Surrounded by dramatic peaks and glaciers, this high-mountain retreat blends breathtaking nature with year-round adventure.
Just minutes away is the Rifflsee — a crystal-clear alpine lake framed by dramatic ridgelines — and the Pitztal Glacier, Tyrol’s highest glacier, where snow and ice meet the sky year-round. At its summit, Café 3440 offers panoramic views and an unforgettable experience above the clouds. Whether you're skiing above the clouds, hiking through lush alpine meadows, or exploring the trails, the valley is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
This year, most spots for the Salomon Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail are already sold out.
