Due to huge thunderstorms in the Tatra mountains, the Tatra Sky Marathon was cancelled. The overall rankings have also been updated.
The Tatra Sky Marathon stopped mid-race and cancelled
Due to the weather forecast, the race was brought forward to start one hour earlier than originally planned, but unfortunately this wasn't enough… Shortly after the women’s race set off, unexpected thunderstorms appeared over the race’s course route. Light rain rapidly turned into heavy thunderstorms, and the Tatra Sky Marathon race director took the decision to stop the women’s race at the 11-kilometre mark, and to not start the men’s race.
The weather forecast gave no indication of improvement in the hours to follow, so the final decision to cancel the race entirely was taken. The 6th stage of the Golden Trail World Series will therefore not award any points for the overall ranking.
Only three races left for the overall ranking
In view of this unprecedented situation, Greg Vollet, Director of the Golden Trail Series, also had to take a decision regarding the Golden Trail World Series' overall ranking. Therefore, it was decided that only 3 races would be taken into account in the calculation of the overall ranking before the final. "We're faced with an unprecedented situation," explained Grégory Vollet. "Up until now, we have been lucky because since 2018, and the creation of the Golden Trail Series, we have never cancelled any event. The decision taken by the Tatra Sky Marathon race management was without doubt the right decision, but unfortunately it has consequences on our runners' rankings. Some started their season at Sierre-Zinal with the aim of doing the last four stages to qualify for the final. With the 6th stage cancelled, this is no longer possible. That's why we have decided to only keep the runners' 3 best results before the final. This will enable each runner to have the right number of races despite this unexpected cancellation."
