Surprise winner at Zegama and currently leading the GTWS, Daniela Oemus tells us about her aspirations for this year’s Series.
She took everyone by surprise! 34-year-old Daniela Oemus just won the prestigious Zegama race in May, the first leg of the Golden Trail World Series. A first victory for the German athlete and mother of two girls, who is little-known on the international circuit. This orthopaedist from Dessau has always loved running, a passion that comes from her grandfather who introduced her to athletics at a young age. After impressive results both on track and road, Daniela Oemus began trail running in 2017. Although she has won several races in the Alps, her victory at the legendary Zegama clearly marks a turning point in her career. Current leader of the GTWS, she is now lining up at the Marathon du Mont-Blanc and the rest of the season as the favourite.
I started running when I was 13 years old. It was my grandfather who persuaded me to join the athletics club near to where we used to live. They were looking for a female runner to do a 5K race and I won the race in my category without any training. Then I started running the 800 metres, but I wasn't very fast. I moved up to 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m and the longer the distance, the better I felt. I also did cross-country and road races. I discovered trail running in 2017 when I won the 63-kilometre race Zugspitz Supertrail. I was used to training at altitude with athletics but not really on trails.
It was a surprise for me too! I did train really hard over the winter, but I didn't expect to win Zegama! I didn’t have the right info during the race, or maybe I just misunderstood it, and so it took me a while to realise that I was going to win it! People haven’t really heard of me because I started trail running so late, in 2017. Since then, I’ve given birth to two daughters. Between 2017 and 2018 I needed hormone treatment and injections to assist my first pregnancy, I finally got pregnant in June 2019. I had to reduce my training to a minimum during the treatment period. Alina was born in February 2020; it took me a year to get back into shape and it turned out that when I ran the Marathon du Mont-Blanc, I was already pregnant with my second daughter, and I didn’t even know! So, I haven’t really been able to train for my goals until this winter because my priorities were elsewhere.
The strange thing about women's bodies is that you are often stronger after giving birth than you were before! I don’t really know why but I sense my body is different. I did a lot of training over the winter in preparation for a road marathon, but a few weeks before the race I had to cancel because of knee pain. So, after that I did a big trail-running training block, with lots of uphill and I was fortunate to be able to go to the mountains 3 weeks before Zegama to work on my downhill techniques. All that work seems to have paid off for my first two goals and yes, I'm very happy with my results.
I don't know if I'll be able to repeat those performances at such a high level... We'll see what happens next. I did have a problem with my foot during Zegama but it seems ok at the moment. I’ve been working hard with my physio and it’s improving all the time. So yes, I hope I can prove that I'm one of the best.
I think the Series combines the most beautiful races in the world; usually to participate in these races you have to be drawn from a lottery. The Golden also organises many other things for the athletes. We have professional photos to use in our media communication, they pay for our trips, and the atmosphere is great. But what’s really cool is racing against the best athletes in the world, who come to compete against each other in a limited number of races.
Right now, I’m fine! I'm lucky to be on holiday in a really peaceful place, so I'm not really feeling the pressure. But after winning Zegama it changed. Despite all that I do still feel confident, even if I’m a bit worried about my foot, but it’ll be ok! I have loads of great memories from the Marathon du Mont-Blanc and it is an amazing race, so I’m looking forward to it!
The Golden Trail Series is a major focus this year. I really want to qualify for the final in Italy. I will run either Dolomyths or Sierre-Zinal. I haven’t decided which one yet, maybe I’ll do both, I don't know... I'll see after the Marathon Mont-Blanc. I've also got a bib for the OCC, I know the race well and I might go to improve last year’s time. Obviously, if I could get a top 5 finish on the Golden this year that would be amazing!
Yes! Why not? During the winter I don’t run many long downhills and I always end up improving during the summer. So, all being well, I should be getting increasingly stronger!
